ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Synagogue of El Tránsito

The Synagogue of El Tránsito is a very, very old building in Spain where Jewish people used to pray a long time ago. It was built almost 700 years ago, which is even older than your grandma or grandpa!

The building is very special because it has a lot of beautiful decorations inside. There are patterns and designs on the walls and ceiling that are very pretty to look at. One of the most special parts is the big window at the top of the room that lets in sunlight. When the sun shines through the window, it creates colorful patterns on the floor, kind of like a rainbow.

Even though the building looks really pretty, it is also an important reminder of a time when Jewish people were not always treated very well in Spain. A long time ago, Jewish people were not allowed to practice their religion in public, so they had to build special places like the Synagogue of El Tránsito where they could pray in secret.

Today, the synagogue is a museum where people can go to learn about the history of Jewish people in Spain and to see all of the pretty decorations inside. It’s very famous and lots of people come from all over the world to see it!
