ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

TEMPUS

Okay kiddo, so have you ever heard of the word "tempus"? It's a big word that means time. Time is something that we can't touch or see, but we feel it passing every day.

Imagine you have a sandcastle that you built at the beach. You use sand to create the castle, right? And you can see the sand falling down as you build your castle. That's kind of how time works too. Every second that passes is like a tiny grain of sand falling from an invisible hourglass.

Now, why do we need to talk about tempus? Well, people use it to talk about different tenses in language. Tense is a special way of using time in language so that we can explain things that happened in the past, things that are happening now, or things that will happen in the future.

So, when you say "I went to the park yesterday," the word "went" is in the past tense, because it already happened. When you say "I am playing with my toys now," the word "am" is in the present tense because it's happening right now. And when we say "I will eat pancakes tomorrow," the word "will" is in the future tense because it will happen in the future.

Tempus is just a fancy word that grown-ups use to talk about all the different things that we can do with time in language.
