ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tabletop runway

A tabletop runway is like a pretend road that airplanes use to take off and land. It's called a tabletop runway because it looks like it's sitting on top of a table - it's really flat and sometimes it's built on a hill or a plateau.

But just like driving a car on a pretend road is different from driving a car on a real road, flying on a tabletop runway is different from flying on a regular runway. Because tabletop runways are flat and sometimes built on a little hill, airplanes have to be very careful when landing and taking off. The pilots have to make sure they get enough speed to take off or come to a stop safely, and they have to watch out for any obstacles like trees or buildings.

Some tabletop runways are in really pretty places, like on an island or in the mountains. But because they can be a bit trickier to fly on, pilots need to have special training to make sure they know how to fly safely on these runways.

So just like you have to be careful driving on pretend roads, pilots have to be extra careful when flying on a tabletop runway!
