ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tacheometry

Tacheometry is like playing a game where you have to measure things far away using a special tool called a theodolite. The theodolite has a big telescope that you look through and a little ruler inside that helps you measure how far away things are.

When you want to measure something, you point the theodolite at it and look through the telescope. You can see a special stick or pole that you put in the ground near the thing you want to measure. This stick has marks on it that tell you how tall it is.

Using the ruler inside the theodolite, you can measure how high the stick is in relation to the thing you want to measure. This tells you how far away the thing is!

It’s like if you were trying to measure how far away your friend was, but you couldn’t go close to them. Instead, you looked at a flag in their hand and tried to figure out how far away they were based on how big the flag looked from far away.

Tacheometry is used by people who build things like bridges, buildings, and roads to help them plan and make sure their projects are the right size and shape. It’s like playing a fun game, but it’s also very important!
