ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tahlil

Tahlil is a very important religious practice that Muslim people do. When someone dies, their family and friends gather around and read out loud a special phrase in Arabic called the kalimah shahada. This phrase reminds people that there is only one God and that Prophet Muhammad is His messenger.

After reciting the kalimah shahada, people repeat a short prayer that goes like this: "Allahummaghfirlahu, warhamhu, wa'afihi, wa'fu'anhu." This prayer means, "O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, restore his health, and grant him Paradise."

People also read a special chapter of the Quran called Surah al-Ikhlas. This chapter talks about how Allah is One and has no partners, and how none of His creation is like Him.

Tahlil is a way for Muslim people to show respect for the person who has died and to pray for their forgiveness and salvation in the afterlife. It helps the family and friends of the deceased to feel comforted during a difficult time and reminds them of the importance of their faith in Allah.
