Tar pit

A tar pit is like a really thick, sticky mud. If something goes into it, it can get stuck and it's really hard to get out. If animals that were alive millions of years ago stepped into a tar pit, they could get stuck and die. Many years later, when people find the tar pits, they can find things like bones and plants that were stuck in the sticky mud and it can help them learn what the environment was like back then.
