ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Teleprinter

A teleprinter is a type of writing machine that can be used to send and receive messages over a long distance without using the internet or mobile phones. It was used a lot in the past before other types of communication were available.

Imagine you want to send a message to your friend who lives far away. Instead of calling them or sending an email, you can use a teleprinter.

The way it works is like this: you write your message on a special piece of paper that is put into the teleprinter. The machine then reads the message and sends it using a special code that is transmitted through a wire or radio signal to your friend's teleprinter.

Your friend's machine receives the code and prints out the message on a piece of paper. They can then read it and reply using their own teleprinter.

It's like having a special secret language that only the teleprinter can understand, and it allows people to communicate over long distances without needing to be in the same room or close by.
