ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Teletype Model 33

So, imagine you have a special typewriter called a Teletype Model 33. It's kind of like a regular typewriter, but it's connected to a phone line so that you can send messages to other people who also have Teletype Model 33 typewriters.

When you type on the Teletype Model 33, your words get transformed into electrical signals that are sent through the phone line to the other person's Teletype Model 33. Their machine then turns those electrical signals back into letters on a piece of paper.

This was really useful back in the olden days when people didn't have computers or smartphones to communicate with each other over long distances. The Teletype Model 33 allowed people to send messages quickly and easily, kind of like texting or emailing today.
