ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Terminal lucidity

Terminal lucidity is when someone who has a serious illness or is very close to dying suddenly becomes aware and alert, even though they have been very ill or unable to communicate or interact at all just before. It’s like they suddenly wake up and can talk and think clearly and remember things they haven’t been able to for a very long time. This alertness usually doesn’t last very long, but it can give an ill person the chance to say some last meaningful words to family and friends.
