ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ternary plot

A ternary plot is a way to show three things at the same time. It's like having a special map where you can see how much of three different things there are in a certain place.

Imagine you have three big buckets. One is for chocolate, one is for vanilla, and one is for strawberry ice cream. You want to know what flavor your friends like the most, but they sometimes like a little bit of all three flavors. So, you fill up each bucket with the different flavors of ice cream and pour them into a big bowl. Now you have a mix of all three flavors, but you have no idea how much of each there is.

This is where the ternary plot comes in. You can use it to show how much of each flavor is in the bowl.

The plot looks like a triangle, and each corner of the triangle represents one of the three things you want to measure. In our ice cream example, one corner would represent chocolate, one corner would represent vanilla, and one corner would represent strawberry.

Now imagine pouring your bowl of mixed ice cream into the triangle, but instead of a bowl, it's a big dot. The dot can move around the triangle to show you how much of each flavor is in it. If the dot is right in the middle, that means there's equal amounts of all three flavors. If the dot is closer to the chocolate corner, that means there's more chocolate in the mix, and so on.

This can be really useful for lots of things, like figuring out what kind of soils are in an area, or how different chemicals are mixed together. You could say it's like a special map for understanding the different parts of a mixture.
