Tetrarchy

Tetrarchy is a type of government used in Ancient Rome that divided power between four people. The four people were called Tetrarchs and each Tetrarch had their own area or kingdom to rule over. Each Tetrarch had their own set of land, laws, armies, and money. They ruled together in an equal way and were very powerful. The most famous example of a Tetrarchy is from a Roman Emperor called Diocletian. He created four Tetrarchs and divided the Roman Empire into four parts. This system helped Diocletian keep the peace and strengthen his rule. It also kept each Tetrarch from trying to become more powerful or trying to take complete control over the Empire. Although tetrarchy was only used in Ancient Rome, it has since become an important way of how leaders can share power in different governments.
