ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Text messaging

Text messaging is like writing a letter, but instead of mailing it, you send it through your phone. Your phone sends a message to another phone and it shows up as words on their screen.

Just like how you have to know someone’s address to send them a letter, you have to know their phone number to send them a text message.

Instead of writing with a pen, you use your phone’s keyboard to type out the message.

Once you press send, your phone sends the message to special towers that help it travel to the other person’s phone.

The other person’s phone receives the message and shows it on their screen, just like how your phone shows you messages you receive.

You can keep sending messages back and forth until you’re done talking. It’s like having a conversation, but in writing instead of talking out loud.
