ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Textile manufacturing terminology

Textile manufacturing is the process of turning raw fibers into fabric or cloth. In this process, there are some important words that will help you to understand what is happening to the fibers when they are being changed into cloth.

Fiber: A fiber is a small, thin, and flexible material that makes up the strands that make up your clothing. These fibers can be made from natural materials such as cotton or wool or from man-made materials such as polyester or nylon.

Yarn: Yarn is the bundle of fibers that are twisted together to make individual threads. Usually, yarns are spun or twisted in ways that can be loose, tight, or twisted together with other threads to create different thicknesses and textures.

Weave: The weave is how the yarn is put together to make the fabric. The two main weaves used are the warp (vertical threads) and the weft (horizontal threads), which are interlaced to create different textures, designs and weights of fabric.

Knit: Instead of weaving, some fabric is made through a process known as knitting. Knit fabric is made with loops of yarn rather than interlacing, which creates stretchy and more flexible fabric.

Dyeing and Printing: Once the fabric is created, it can be dyed to add color or printed with designs. Dyeing involves adding color to the fabric fibers themselves, while printing involves adding a design on top of the fabric with ink.

Finishing: Once the fabric has been dyed or printed, it will go through a variety of finishing processes to create the final textile. These processes can include things like washing (to remove extra dye or chemicals), pressing (for a smooth finish), or treatments with chemicals (to make the fabric resistant to stains, wrinkles, or flame retardant).

Overall, there are many steps and processes involved in textile manufacturing that take simple fibers and create intricate and useful fabrics we wear and use every day.
