ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Thai solar calendar

Hi there, kiddo! Do you know what a calendar is? It's like a big book with numbers and days of the year. We use it to help us keep track of time and plan important events like birthdays or holidays.

Now, have you ever heard of Thailand? It's a country far away from us, and they have a special calendar they use to tell time that's different from ours. It's called the Thai Solar Calendar.

The Thai Solar Calendar is based on the sun, just like ours, but it has some important differences. Instead of starting in January like our calendar, the Thai Solar Calendar starts on the first day of a month called "Makar" which happens around mid-January.

Each day in the Thai Solar Calendar is given a special name and number. There are 27 names for each month, and the days are numbered from 1 to 30 or 31, just like in our calendar.

Also, the Thai Solar Calendar has several important holidays that are different from ours. One of the biggest holidays in Thailand is called Songkran, which is their New Year's Day. It happens on April 13th, but it can last for up to three days!

So, there you have it, kiddo! The Thai Solar Calendar is a special way of telling time used in Thailand, and it's based on the sun just like our calendar. It has different names for each day of the month and some special holidays that are different from what we celebrate. Cool, huh?
