The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often shortened to "LDS Church" or just "the Church") is a Christian denomination founded by Joseph Smith Jr. in the early 1800s. It's based on a religion called Mormonism, which follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. The LDS Church teaches that Jesus is the Son of God, and that members of the Church have been given the power to baptize, or make someone a member of the Church by performing a special prayer. The Church also believes that families can be together forever after life, and encourages its members to serve one another in the Church and in their communities. The Church has temples all around the world, which provide special services only available to Church members. It also runs hospitals, churches, and universities.
