Schizophrenia is a condition which can cause people to have trouble thinking, feeling, or behaving normally. It is a disability that affects many people, but it has been said that Black people are disproportionately affected. This has been called the "protest psychosis" because some people have suggested that it is caused by the stress of living in a world where they don't have the same rights and opportunities as other people. This idea suggests that the stress of racism or the experience of oppression can contribute to the development of symptoms of schizophrenia. It is important to remember that this idea is not proven and, in fact, it is a very controversial one. Scientists generally agree that, while psychological stress can contribute to the development of mental illness, it is not the sole cause, as there are many other factors at play.
