ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

The Tenth Man (Chayefsky play)

Ok kiddo, let's talk about the tenth man! Imagine you’re playing with your nine best friends and you all have to decide what game to play. You suggest playing tag, but everyone else wants to play hide-and-seek. No matter how many times you tell them why tag is better, they won't listen to you because you're just one person out of ten.

In the play "The Tenth Man" by Paddy Chayefsky, there is a group of ten friends who are trying to figure out what to do about a problem. There are nine guys who believe one thing, but the tenth guy thinks differently. It's like the game we were playing earlier, but with bigger consequences.

The problem they are facing is really serious. They are all Jewish and live in a time when the Nazis are trying to hurt and kill Jewish people. The nine friends think the best thing to do is to hide in a basement and wait for the danger to pass. But the tenth guy thinks that they can't just hide, they need to fight back against the Nazis.

The other nine friends don't want to listen to the tenth guy because it's easier to just hide and hope to survive. They think he's wrong and crazy. But the tenth guy keeps trying to explain why he thinks they need to fight back. It's like when you really want your friends to play tag, but they just want to play hide-and-seek, right?

So the tenth guy keeps trying to convince his friends to fight back, and eventually, he succeeds! They all agree to fight back against the Nazis together. Even though the ninth guy was a little bit scared and didn't think it would work, he realized that they were stronger and better together.

So, the story of "The Tenth Man" is all about how just one person can make a big difference. Even if you’re outnumbered, you should always speak up for what you believe in. It's important to listen to other people's ideas too, but don't be afraid to speak your own mind, just like the tenth man in the play!
