Okay, kiddo, so imagine you have a big bowl of rice, but there are some little stones mixed in with the rice. You don't want to eat the stones because they might hurt your teeth, right? So what do you do?
Well, you could try to pick out the stones one by one, but that would take a really long time and it would be hard to get every single stone out. So instead, you can pour the rice and stones into a big flat pan, like a tray, and you hold it up high and tip it back and forth. The wind blows through and blows away the lighter rice, but the heavier stones stay behind in the pan.
This process is called winnowing! It means separating the good stuff from the bad stuff by using the wind to blow away the bad stuff. People have been doing this for thousands of years, especially when they harvest crops like rice or wheat. It's a really handy way to get rid of anything that you don't want to eat or use.
