ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

The formation of Malaysia

Okay kiddo, let me explain to you how Malaysia was formed in a way that is easy to understand, just like you are 5 years old.

So, a long, long time ago, there were different kingdoms and tribes living on the land where Malaysia is right now. Some of these kingdoms were called Malacca, Johor, and Kedah. They had their own rulers and systems of governing their people.

But in the 1800s, a lot of powerful countries like the United Kingdom, Portugal and the Netherlands started to come to Southeast Asia to trade and colonize. They wanted to control the resources and the land of the region, including Malaysia.

As a result, these kingdoms and tribes were gradually taken over by the powerful countries. One of them, the British, took control of a place called The Straits Settlements which included areas like Penang, Malacca, and Singapore.

After World War II, the people of Malaysia started to want independence from the colonial powers. They wanted to govern themselves and make their own decisions.

In 1957, Malaya (Peninsular Malaysia) gained independence from the British. Later, in 1963, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak joined to form Malaysia. This was also supported by the British who were keen to form a federation to maintain security in the region.

Since then, Malaysia has been an independent country with its own government, laws, and traditions. It has gone through many changes and challenges over the years but it remains a thriving and diverse country with different ethnic groups and cultures living together in harmony.

So, that's how Malaysia was formed from different kingdoms and tribes through colonization and then independence. I hope that helps you understand it better, kiddo!
