ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

The king is dead, long live the king!

Okay kiddo, so you know kings, right? They are like really important leaders who rule over a country. But sometimes, kings die, just like regular people. So when a king dies, it means that there is no one to rule the kingdom anymore.

But don't worry, because the people have already thought of a way to make sure that there will always be someone to rule the kingdom. This is where the phrase "The king is dead, long live the king!" comes in.

What this means is that when the old king dies, a new king will take his place right away. So even though the old king is gone, there is always going to be a new king to rule the kingdom.

It's kind of like when you finish eating all your ice cream in a cone, but then you already have a new cone with more ice cream in it waiting for you. The first cone is gone, but you still have more ice cream to enjoy.

So now you know that even though the king may die, there will always be a new king to rule the kingdom. The phrase "The king is dead, long live the king!" simply reminds us that the kingdom will never be leaderless.
