ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

The law of conservation of misery

Well, kiddo, the law of conservation of misery is a fancy way of saying that misery can't just disappear or magically go away. Let me explain it a little more.

Do you know what misery is? It's that feeling of being really sad, upset or unhappy about something. Maybe you've felt that way when you didn't get to do something fun or when someone said something mean to you.

Now, the law of conservation of misery says that when you feel miserable, that feeling doesn't just disappear. It has to go somewhere else. For example, let's say you were feeling really sad because you had to miss a birthday party. Maybe you end up taking that sadness out on your little sister when you get home. Or maybe your mom notices you're upset and gets worried, which makes her feel anxious and unhappy too.

The point is, when you feel miserable, it can affect other people or things around you. It's like a big circle of sadness that keeps going around and around. That's why it's important to try and find ways to deal with your emotions in healthy ways, so that you're not spreading misery to others.

I hope that helps you understand the law of conservation of misery a bit better, kiddo. Remember, it's okay to feel sad sometimes, but it's important to try and deal with those feelings in a positive way.
