ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Thematic vowel

Okay kiddo! So, you know how there are vowels in the alphabet? They are A, E, I, O, and U. Well, a thematic vowel is a special vowel that some words have in the middle of them.

It's like when you say the word "playground". Do you hear the sound "a" in the middle? That's the thematic vowel!

Sometimes words don't have a thematic vowel, like the word "cat". But other words do, like "kangaroo" or "telephone".

Thematic vowels can help us know what kind of word it is, like if it's a noun, adjective, or verb. And they can make the word easier to say and remember too!
