ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Thermal rocket

Okay kiddo, let me try to explain thermal rockets in a way you can understand.

Do you remember when we went camping and we made a fire to cook our food? Well, a thermal rocket is kind of like that fire, except it's used to power a rocket and make it go really fast into space!

You see, in a thermal rocket, instead of burning wood like we did in our campfire, they burn something called a propellant. This is a special kind of fuel that makes a big flame when it's burned.

When the propellant burns, it produces hot gases that shoot out of the back of the rocket, pushing it forward. Just like the fire made the smoke rise up and away from us, the hot gases from the propellant create thrust that makes the rocket go up and away from Earth.

So basically, a thermal rocket works by burning special fuel to produce hot gases that propel the rocket and make it go really fast!
