ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Thiocyanate

Thiocyanate is a chemical that is made up of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur atoms. It is usually found in things like plants, soil, and water. Think of it like a special type of Lego brick that has three different pieces stuck together.

When you eat something that has thiocyanate in it, like certain vegetables, your body breaks it down into smaller pieces called ions. These ions are kind of like the different colors of Lego bricks that you can take apart and put back together in different ways.

One of the things that makes thiocyanate special is that it can bind with something called a metal ion. Metal ions are also like Lego bricks, but they are different colors and have different shapes than the regular Lego bricks. When thiocyanate and metal ions come together, they can make really cool new compounds that can be used for lots of different things! For example, some of these compounds are used in medicine to help fight off infections.

But be careful! Thiocyanate can also be dangerous if you are exposed to too much of it. If you touch it or breathe it in, it can hurt your skin or lungs. So always make sure that you are being safe when working with thiocyanate or other chemicals!
