ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Third stream

Okay kiddo, let me try to explain what third stream is. Remember when we mix two colors, like red and blue, and we get purple? Third stream is kinda like that, but with music.

Usually, there are two main types of music: classical and jazz. But sometimes, musicians like to mix them together to create a new type of music called third stream. It’s a blend of both classical and jazz music.

Imagine if we had a classical musician who played the piano and a jazz musician who played the trumpet. They can decide to play together and create a new song that has the structure and elegance of classical music but with the improvisation and swing of jazz music.

Third stream can be really cool because it takes the best parts of both types of music and makes something new and unique. Now, you may not hear third stream on the radio very often, but it’s worth listening to if you like classical and jazz music.
