ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Thomas A. Drake

Thomas A. Drake is a person who used to work for a big organization called the National Security Agency (NSA). The NSA is a group that keeps track of electronic information to help keep the United States safe.

But, Mr. Drake disagreed with some of the things the NSA was doing. He thought they were breaking some rules, and not following the law. He was worried that the people who worked there were using their power to spy on people who didn't deserve it, like innocent citizens.

So, Mr. Drake decided to speak up about what he thought was wrong, and he talked to some reporters at a newspaper. But, the government didn't like that, and they thought Mr. Drake was telling secrets that he wasn't supposed to share. They charged him with some crimes and took him to court.

In the end, Mr. Drake was found not guilty of most of the charges. But, his story is important because it shows that sometimes people have to be brave and stand up for what they believe is right, even if it's hard or scary.
