ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Thorpe reaction

Okay, so imagine you're playing with some building blocks. You have red blocks and blue blocks, and you want to make a tower out of them. But you accidentally put two red blocks together and they stick together really well. That's kind of like what happens in a thorpe reaction.

In a thorpe reaction, there are two chemicals called an alkyl halide and an alcohol. When we mix them together and add a base (like throwing in another building block), they react and stick together like those two red blocks. But instead of just sticking together, they make a brand new molecule!

This new molecule is called an ether, and it looks kind of like two big circles connected by a line in the middle. The ether is useful for lots of things, like making solvents or medicines.

So that's the thorpe reaction in a nutshell - like building blocks sticking together to make something new and useful!
