ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Threatened species

You know how sometimes we love to eat some animals and plants like chicken or carrots, and that's totally fine because there are lots of them and we can always find more to eat? Well, there are some animals and plants that aren't so lucky. These animals and plants are in danger because people are hurting them or making it hard for them to find food, water, or a good place to live.

When an animal or plant is in danger like this, we call it a "threatened" species. This means that if we don't do something to help them, they might disappear and never be seen again. It's like when you lose your favorite toy, and you might never find it again.

Lots of people care about threatened species and want to help keep them safe. Scientists study which species are in danger and what we can do to help them. Sometimes the government makes laws that protect these animals and plants. People might also work together to create homes and food for them, like building special houses for them or planting new trees for them to eat.

So in short, when we say a species is threatened, it means that we need to be extra careful about how we treat them so they don't disappear forever.
