Okay kiddo, so you know how when you get a cold, your nose gets stuffy and you have trouble breathing? Well, sometimes a lot of people in a certain area can have trouble breathing all at once because of something called thunderstorm asthma.
When it rains really hard and there's a lot of wind and thunder, it can stir up a lot of pollen and mold in the air. These tiny things can get into your nose and make it hard to breathe or cause you to start coughing and wheezing, which is what we call asthma.
Sometimes, when there's a big thunderstorm and lots of pollen and mold are in the air at the same time, it's like a perfect storm for asthma attacks. That's why we call it thunderstorm asthma.
It's really important to stay inside and take your medicine if you have asthma during a thunderstorm, and if you ever feel like you're having trouble breathing, ask a grown-up to help you get to the doctor or call 911 right away.
