Timeline of Chennai history

Okay kiddo, let’s talk about the history of Chennai! Once upon a time, a long time ago, there were many different kingdoms, empires and civilizations that lived in the region that we now call Chennai. Some of these were the Pallavas, the Cholas, and the British.

First, let’s talk about the Pallavas. They were a powerful dynasty that ruled the region from the 3rd to the 9th century. They were great builders and artists and they left many beautiful temples and sculptures that we can still see today.

Next, we have the Cholas. They were a mighty empire that ruled from the 9th to the 13th century. They built some of the most stunning temples in India, including the famous Brihadeeswara temple.

After the Cholas, many different kingdoms and rulers came and went. Then, in the 16th century, the Portuguese arrived and built a settlement which they called São Tomé. They were followed by the Dutch and the British who also built settlements and trading posts in the area.

In 1639, the British East India Company established a trading post on the land where Chennai is now situated. They built a fortress and named it Fort St. George. Chennai became an important trading center for the British and the city continued to grow and develop over the next few centuries.

During the Indian Independence Movement in the early 20th century, Chennai played a significant role. Many famous leaders, such as Mahatma Gandhi, visited the city and held important meetings and rallies here.

Finally, in 1947, India gained independence from British rule and Chennai became the capital city of the state of Tamil Nadu. The city continued to thrive and grow, becoming one of the largest and most important cities in India.

So, in short kiddo, Chennai has a long and rich history, with many different kingdoms and empires ruling over it throughout the centuries. And now, it’s one of the most important and bustling cities in India.
