Timeline of Jerusalem

A long time ago, thousands of years ago, Jerusalem was just a little city in the Middle East. But it was a really special city because it was holy to three major religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
A long time ago, in ancient times, the Jewish people took control of Jerusalem and built the First Temple there. But eventually, the Babylonians destroyed it and the Jews were taken away as slaves.
Hundreds of years later, the Jewish people came back to Jerusalem and rebuilt the Second Temple. But then the Romans came and destroyed it again, and the Jews were scattered all over the world.
Later on, the Islamic Empire grew and they conquered Jerusalem. They built a mosque called the Dome of the Rock to show how important the city was to them.
Over time, different groups of people fought for control over Jerusalem. The Crusaders, who were Christian soldiers from Europe, took over the city for a while. But eventually they were pushed out and the Muslims took control again.
In the modern era, Jerusalem has been a very complicated and controversial place. Israel and Palestine both claim it as their capital city. It's been the site of many conflicts and it's still a very important city to all three of the religions that hold it sacred.
