1843 - The British East India Company took control of Karachi and ruled until 1947.
1858 - Karachi became a district in the Bombay Presidency of British India.
1947 - After independence, Karachi became the capital of the newly-created state of Pakistan.
1958 - The Quaid-e-Azam International Airport was opened in Karachi.
1960 - Karachi was declared Pakistan's first capital.
1973 - Karachi's first university, the University of Karachi, was founded.
1980s - The city experienced an influx of refugees from different parts of Pakistan and Bangladesh.
1997 - Karachi was declared the financial capital of Pakistan.
2010 - The population of Karachi was estimated to be over 18 million, making it one of the largest cities in the world!
