ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timeline of Kurdish uprisings

Okay, so imagine you have a bunch of friends who all live together in a big house, but they're not all happy with each other. Some of them feel like they're not getting enough say in how things are run, and they think they might want to leave the big house and start their own smaller house.

That's kind of like what happened with the Kurds. They're a group of people who live in parts of Syria, Turkey, Iraq, and Iran, and they've never had their own country. In the past, they've tried to rebel and get their own country, or at least more say in the way things are done, but it hasn't always worked out.

One of the first big uprisings was in the 1920s. The Kurds didn't like the way they were being treated by the new government in Turkey, so they fought against them. But they were outnumbered and out-gunned, so they eventually had to stop.

Then in the 1980s, there was another big uprising in Turkey. The Kurds there felt like they were being treated unfairly and they were limited in the types of jobs they could have and the language they could speak. So they formed their own political party, but the government didn't like that and they cracked down on them pretty hard.

There have been more uprisings since then, but they're all pretty complicated and involve a lot of political maneuvering and violence. Basically, the Kurds want more say in how things are done in the countries where they live, but the governments there don't always want to give them that say, so there's a lot of tension and conflict.
