ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timeline of asexual history

Well, kiddo, asexual people have always existed throughout history, but it wasn't until more recent times that people started using the word "asexual" to describe themselves.

Back in ancient times, people didn't really have a concept of asexuality, so there isn't much recorded history about it. However, there are some mythological figures, like the Greek goddess Athena, who were said to be asexual.

In the 1800s and early 1900s, people started talking more openly about sex and sexuality, but asexuality wasn't really a part of that conversation. It wasn't until the 1970s and 80s that asexual people started organizing and forming communities.

In the 1990s, the internet made it easier for asexual people to connect with each other and share information. This led to the creation of online forums and eventually whole online communities where asexual people could meet and support each other.

Starting in the early 2000s, the asexual community started gaining more visibility and recognition. Asexual people began to speak out about their experiences, and researchers started studying asexuality as a legitimate sexual orientation. In 2011, the documentary "(A)sexual" was released, which helped spread awareness about asexuality.

Today, there are more and more resources for asexual people. There are books, blogs, and support groups, and some countries have started recognizing asexuality as a valid sexual orientation. As time goes on, hopefully asexual people will continue to gain acceptance and visibility in society.
