ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timeline of microscope technology

A long time ago, people didn't have microscopes because they didn't know they needed them. They didn't know that there were tiny things called cells and germs that were too small to see with their eyes.

One day, a man named Antony van Leeuwenhoek discovered that he could see things that were too small for the naked eye to see by looking through a special glass with one tiny lens. This was the first microscope, and it helped people a lot!

Over time, scientists and inventors improved the microscope by adding more lenses and making them stronger. They also found ways to make the images appear clearer and more detailed.

In the early 1800s, a man named Joseph Jackson Lister added more lenses to the microscope, which allowed scientists to see cells and living organisms in more detail. This microscope became famous under the name 'Lister's Compound Microscope.'

In the mid-1800s, Ernst Abbe created a new type of microscope called the 'Abbe Condenser.' This microscope made it easier to see bacteria and helped scientists confirm the germ theory of disease.

In the 1900s, the electron microscope was invented. This microscope uses electrons instead of light to see things that are even smaller than cells. Scientists can use electron microscopes to see details of atoms, molecules, and even tiny viruses.

Now, there are many different types of microscopes that can magnify things thousands of times their actual size. These microscopes help scientists discover new things every day, and they're still improving to help us learn even more about the world around us!
