ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Timeline of racial tension in Omaha, Nebraska

Okay kiddo, so a long time ago in Omaha, some people had different skin colors and some people didn't like that. This made some white people treat black people unfairly and be mean to them.

In the 1910s, black people started moving to Omaha to work in the meatpacking industry, but they were forced to live in certain neighborhoods and couldn't go to certain places like restaurants and theaters because of their skin color.

In 1919, there was a big fight between a white person and a black person and it made people even angrier towards each other. This led to a riot where white people attacked black people and destroyed their homes and businesses. It was a really scary time for everyone involved.

Later on, in the 1960s, black people started to fight for their rights and demand fair treatment. They protested and marched to show that they should be treated the same as everyone else.

Even today, there are still some people who treat others differently because of their skin color, but we're learning more and more that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect, no matter what they look like.
