Timeline of web search engines

Once upon a time, there was no internet search engine, but there were websites. People would look for things they wanted to know by visiting different websites one-by-one. It was very inconvenient and took a lot of time.

Then, in 1990, the first search engine was created! It was called Archie and it found information by looking through the website index files.

In 1991, another search engine named Gopher was created. It searched only plain text files on the internet.

In 1993, the very first website was launched and a year later, in 1994, the first real search engine, named WebCrawler, was created. It was the first search engine to index the entire content on web pages and made finding information much better.

In 1995, Yahoo was born! It was a search engine but also had other features like email, news, and sports. It became one of the earliest and most popular search engines of the time.

Then came the most popular search engine of them all - Google. It was founded by two students in 1998 and quickly became a favorite for its accurate and fast results. Google is still the most popular search engine today!

After that, many other search engines have been created, like Amazon A9, Ask Jeeves, Bing, and many more. They are all useful in their respective ways, but none have eclipsed the popularity of Google.
