Timeline of women in warfare and the military in the United States, 2000–2010

Okay kiddo, women have been a part of the military for a long time, but it wasn't until 2000 that they were allowed to officially serve in all combat roles.

In 2003, the United States went to war in Iraq and many women were deployed to serve. Some worked as medics or in other support roles, while others worked on the front lines alongside men.

In 2004, the US Army launched a program called "Female Engagement Teams" which trained women to interact with female civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan. This was important because in some cultures, women were not allowed to speak or interact with men who were not their relatives.

In 2005, Sergeant Leigh Ann Hester became the first woman in US Military history to receive the Silver Star for her actions in combat in Iraq. She was recognized for her bravery and leadership during a firefight against insurgents.

From 2006-2010, the number of women serving in the military continued to grow. In 2008, the US Army opened its first Gender Integration Training Center to help prepare soldiers for working with and leading soldiers of the opposite gender.

In 2010, President Barack Obama signed the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" which allowed gay and lesbian individuals to openly serve in the military. This was an important step towards more inclusive and diverse military service.

Overall, women have made significant strides in the military over the past decade, from being able to serve in all combat roles to receiving recognition for their bravery in combat. The military continues to work on creating a more inclusive and diverse environment for all individuals who want to serve their country.
