Titulus pictus

Okay kiddo, a titulus pictus is a Latin phrase that translates to "painted label" or "painted sign."

Long ago, people didn't have things like billboards or neon signs to tell them what was being sold in shops or stalls. Instead, they would paint a picture or a symbol on a board or a piece of cloth to show what kind of things they were selling.

For example, if someone was selling fish, they might paint a picture of a fish on their board or cloth. If they were selling pottery, they might draw a picture of a pottery vase.

These painted signs helped people who couldn't read or write to still know what was being sold. They were also helpful in crowded markets because people could easily spot the painted signs and find the things they were looking for.

So, a titulus pictus is just a fancy way of saying a painted sign that people used a long time ago to show what they were selling. Cool, huh?
