ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ton of refrigeration

A ton of refrigeration is a unit of measurement that is used to measure how much cooling power a refrigeration system has. Think of it like a toy car that you use to cool down things like food and drinks.

When we say "ton," we don't mean a real ton like the weight of a car or a elephant. It's just a way scientists and engineers measure cooling power. It's like measuring how tall you are in feet or meters.

One ton of refrigeration is the amount of cooling power needed to freeze one ton of water in 24 hours. That's a lot of cooling power! So, if you have a refrigeration system that has 5 tons of cooling power, it means it can freeze 5 tons of water in 24 hours.

Cooling down things takes energy, and refrigeration systems use a special gas called refrigerant to do the job. The refrigerant flows through pipes and absorbs heat from the area that needs cooling. Then it moves to a compressor that squeezes it so it gets hot, and then to a condenser that cools it down again. This process repeats over and over again to make things really cool, kind of like a hamster on a wheel that keeps running and running.

So, when you hear people talk about tons of refrigeration, they're talking about how much cooling power a system has. The more tons of cooling power, the better the system is at keeping things cool.
