ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Tone policing

Tone policing is when someone tells you that you can't express your feelings in a certain way, or you’re being too strong or too emotional about something. It's like a grown-up telling a kid not to get too excited or angry about something, even though the kid may have a legitimate reason to feel that way. It can be really annoying and hurtful. Tone policing stops you from expressing your true feelings, so it's important to be aware of it and not let anyone police your tone.
