Sometimes, countries or groups of people might use really mean and nasty ways to get information or find out secrets from other people. One of the really mean things they might do is torture. This is when they hurt someone on purpose to get them to say what they want to hear.
Now, some people, called investors, might have a lot of money and they want to make even more money by buying things that other people might not like or want. One of these things is torture equipment – things that help people hurt others. They might buy these things from companies that make them and then sell them to other people who might use them for torture.
This is what we call a torture trade – it's when people make money by buying and selling things that help other people hurt and torture other people. It’s really not a nice thing to do and hurts a lot of people, which is why a lot of people are against it.
