Traditional Tibetan medicine

Traditional Tibetan Medicine (also known as Sowa Rigpa) is an ancient system of health care that looks at the body, mind, and spirit when treating a person. It was developed thousands of years ago by monks of Tibetan Buddhism and is still practiced today as a healthcare system. It includes a combination of diet, lifestyle and medical treatments that focus on healing, prevention, and holistic health.

Traditional Tibetan Medicine looks at illness as a disruption in the body's harmony and balance, and believes in treating the whole person instead of just one symptom. Treatments may include herbal remedies, acupuncture, moxibustion (heat therapy), massage, and lifestyle changes. The goal is to help the patient achieve physical, mental and spiritual balance.

For a child, this ancient system of medicine might look like a doctor talking to them about their diet, lifestyle, and mood; prescribing a herbal remedy or massage; talking to them and their parents about how to work on lifestyle changes that improve their emotional and spiritual health; and meeting them regularly to check their progress. Traditional Tibetan Medicine is a holistic approach to health and well-being, and relies on strengthening body, mind, and spirit.
