Transgender history

Okay kiddo, so today we're going to learn about transgender history!

People have been changing their gender for a very long time, even though it wasn't really talked about or accepted by society. Some people feel like they were born the wrong gender and want to live as the gender that feels right to them.

In the past, there were some cultures where transgender people were accepted and even celebrated. For example, in Native American cultures, some people were seen as "two-spirit," meaning they possessed both male and female characteristics and identities. They were considered to have special spiritual powers and were often respected members of their communities.

However, in other cultures, transgender people were not accepted and could face discrimination, violence, or even death. It wasn't until the 20th century that transgender people started to come together and fight for their rights and recognition.

One important event in transgender history was the Stonewall riots in 1969. This was a series of protests in New York City led by LGBTQ+ people, including many transgender women of color, who were tired of being mistreated and discriminated against. These protests helped spark the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Since then, laws have been passed to protect transgender people from discrimination, and more and more people are coming out as transgender and being accepted by society. But there is still a lot of work to be done to make sure that transgender people are treated with respect and dignity, and that their rights are protected.
