ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Transitioning (transgender)

Transitioning is when someone changes how they look and how they feel inside so that they can be their true selves. When someone is transgender, that means that the gender they were assigned at birth (like being called a boy or girl based on their body parts) doesn't match who they really are inside. For example, a person who was born with a boy's body might feel like they are really a girl, or vice versa.

Transitioning can involve many different things, depending on what feels right to each person. Some people might change their name, wear clothes that match their gender identity, and use different pronouns (like "he" or "she"). Others might take medicine or have surgery to make their body look more like the gender they identify as.

It's important to understand that not every transgender person chooses to transition in the same way, or at all. It's also important to accept and respect someone's gender identity, even if it's different from what you might have assumed based on their body parts. Being supportive of someone who is transgender means listening to them, using the name and pronoun that they prefer, and treating them with kindness and respect.
