ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Transnational Corporations Observatory

Okay kiddo, so there are some really big businesses, we call them corporations, that operate in lots of different countries. Like imagine if you had a lemonade stand and you sold lemonade in your neighborhood, but then you also had another stand in a different neighborhood where you sold lemonade too. These big corporations are like that, but on a much bigger scale. They have stores or factories or offices in lots of different countries around the world.

Now, because these corporations are so big and have so much power, it’s important to keep an eye on them and make sure they’re not doing anything bad. That’s where the Transnational Corporations Observatory (TCO) comes in. They’re like detectives who investigate what these big corporations are doing and report back to everyone else so we can all know what’s going on.

The TCO looks at things like how much money these corporations are making, who they’re employing, how they treat their workers, and how they impact the environment. They also look at things like whether the corporation is paying their fair share of taxes or if they’re doing something illegal.

By doing this work, the TCO helps people to know what’s really going on with these big corporations and gives us a chance to speak up and ask for change if we don’t like what we see. So basically, the TCO is like a superhero that helps keep big corporations in check and make sure they’re doing good things for people and the planet!
