ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Triangle inequality

Triangle inequality is kind of like a game where you have to get from one place to another by walking in a straight line. But the game has a rule that says you can't walk further than the distance between the two places you're going to.

For example, imagine you're in a room and you want to get to the couch on the other side of the room. You can walk straight towards the couch, but you can't walk further than the distance between you and the couch. If you try to walk further than that, you might bump into a wall or a table or something, and you won't be able to get to the couch.

This is what triangle inequality is all about. It says that if you have a triangle with three sides, each side has to be shorter than the other two sides added together.

So imagine you have a triangle with sides A, B, and C. If you add sides A and B together, that total distance has to be longer than side C. And if you add sides A and C together, that total distance has to be longer than side B. And if you add sides B and C together, that total distance has to be longer than side A.

It's kind of like a game to see if you can make a triangle that follows this rule. Try drawing some triangles and measuring their sides to see if they follow the triangle inequality!
