ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Trilateration

Trilateration is a way to find out where you are using math and distances. Imagine you're playing hide-and-seek and you're trying to find your friend who's hiding somewhere in the room. You can ask your other friends to tell you how far away they are from your hidden friend. If you have at least 3 friends who tell you how far away they are, you can use that information to figure out where your hidden friend is hiding.

Trilateration works in the same way, but with satellites and GPS receivers. So, you have a GPS receiver in your phone or in your car, and it sends a signal to satellites orbiting the Earth. The satellites send back signals that your GPS receiver collects and uses to figure out your location.

When your GPS receiver talks to the satellites, it gets a signal that contains information like how far away the satellite is from your receiver. If you have at least 3 satellites giving you this information, you can use trilateration to figure out where you are on Earth.

It's kind of like playing hide-and-seek, but instead of using friends and distances in a room, you're using satellites and distances in space to figure out where you are.
