ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Trucker's hitch

Okay kiddo, imagine you're playing with your toy car and you want to tie a string from one end of your room to the other end so your toy car can drive across it. But you know what? You don't have any adults around to help you tie the string really tight, so it keeps sagging in the middle and your toy car can't drive over it.

Well, a trucker's hitch is a special way to tie a rope or string so that you can pull it super tight all by yourself, just like a truck driver can do when they're tying down heavy cargo in the back of their truck.

Here's how it works: first, you tie a regular knot around something sturdy, like a table leg or a chair back. Then, you bring the rest of the rope over to another spot where you want the rope to be tight and tie a loop around it.

Next, you take the tail end of the rope and thread it through the loop you just made. You pull on the tail end really hard (with all your strength!) and watch as the loop tightens up like magic.

Finally, you can tie another knot to keep everything in place. Now you've got a super tight string that your toy car can safely drive across without any droopiness!
