ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

True arithmetic

True arithmetic is when we use numbers and symbols to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Just like how we count with our fingers, true arithmetic lets us solve bigger math problems. We can use numbers like 1, 2, and 3, and symbols like + (which means add) and - (which means subtract) to do true arithmetic.

For example, if we have 3 apples and we want to give 2 of them to our friend, we can use true arithmetic to figure out how many apples we'll have left. We start with the number 3, and then we use the symbol - (subtract) to take away 2 apples. This gives us the answer, which is 1 apple left.

True arithmetic is helpful for lots of problems like counting money, measuring things, and solving puzzles. As we learn more about true arithmetic, we can use bigger numbers and more complicated symbols to solve even harder problems!
